Obituary of Elsie McKnight

Elsie Elizabeth Rintoul was born August 8, 1928 in Almonte, Ontario, the eldest of 8 children of Alva and Helen (Somerville) Rintoul.  She grew up on the Rintoul farm near Carleton Place, Ont.  After studying clothing design and sewing at the Toronto School of Design, Elsie worked at Singer Sewing in Ottawa.

Elsie married John William (Bill) McKnight on 30 December 1950. 

Bill was born 23 July 1923 in Lower Millstream N.B., the son of Joseph Albert McKnight (1891-1933) and Sarah Ann (Sadie) McAuley (1895-1994).  Bill was in the Air Force for 32 years, and the civil service for 7 years. 

During these years, the family lived in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Halifax, New York and Germany, and raised 2 children (Wayne and Brenda).   After Bill’s retirement they lived in Lower Millstream N.B. for 26 years (1981 to 2007) and in 2008 moved to Dartmouth N.S. 

Bill died April 6, 2009 in Dartmouth General Hospital at age 85.  In Dec 2017, Elsie moved from Dartmouth N.S. to Carleton Place Ont., to be close to her children and grand-children, and her big Rintoul family.    Elsie celebrated her 97th birthday on 8 Aug 2025.  She passed away peacefully in her sleep on 27 August 2025, at the age of 97.
