Obituary of Desmond Smith

Desmond Smith was born in Cape Breton on February 27, 1918, he was the son of the late John and Martha (Whittle) Smith and was the husband of the late Elinor (McLeod) Smith. Desmond served overseas in WWII, stationed in France, Egypt and Africa. He was employed with the Halifax Shipyard for several years and retired from the CNR in Moncton in 1983 as a pipe fitter and welder. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Moncton Branch # 6. He was a former Cub and Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of Canada. He was an avid lawn bowler and a member of the Fairlanes Senior Golden Jets Alley bowlers and was instrumental in establishing many lawn bowling greens in Moncton and South Eastern New Brunswick. He and Elinor donated many years to Blind Sports of New Brunswick especially in lawn bowling. He was active in many sports running road races until age 70. He received the Golden Gloves Award in Boston and represented NS and NB in the National Lawn Bowling Championships numerous times. Mr. Desmond Joseph Smith of Moncton, NB, passed away at the Moncton Hospital, on January 9, 2000 at the age of 81. Desmond will be sadly missed by his Wife; his daughter; Noreen Turner of Halifax, NS; three sons; Blayne and his wife Judy of Colorado Springs, Malcolm and his wife Claudia of Vernon, BC, Neil and his wife Annette of Dalhousie, NB; one brother; Edward of Halifax; eight grandchildren; Colt, Hillary, Michael, Brennan, Alicia, Lindsay, Ryan and Kristyn; also by several nieces and nephews. Desmond was predeceased by his four brothers; Cecil, William, Celestine, Jack. A service celebrating Desmond Joseph's life will be held from Holy Family R/C Church in Moncton on Wednesday, January 12, 2000 at 11:00 am.
