My sincere condolences to the Hayes family on the occasion of Jean's passing. I was shocked to hear of her death. I worked with Jean for over 20 years in the Livestock Branch, Corporate Services Branch, and the Veterinary Services Branch. I remember several times asking her to take on new duties; she never flinched and was always cooperative in carrying through with them. For example, in the late 1990s, I recall asking her to take on the financial monitoring of the Beef Improvement Program from another departmental branch. In doing so, she developed a computer monitoring spreadsheet that put the accounting staff in the previous branch to shame. Likewise, in 2007 she assumed the supervisory role of the veterinary pharmaceutical stock room, a complex task with hectic responsibilities and the supervision of two other staff members. In carrying out these challenging duties, she again developed a custom computer program that made ordering pharmaceuticals much more pleasant and efficient for the regional veterinary staff while improving inventory control. She was meticulous in anything she turned her hand to. I always appreciated her cooperative, pleasant attitude and her quiet sense of humour once you got to know her.

I worked with Jean at the Department of Agriculture and remember her sense of humour. I remember her books of Herman comics that she loved and shared with us.
