Keith and family,
Extending my sincere sympathies on the passing of Shirley, as her obituary so well describes, she was a very caring and compassionate woman who had a positive influence on all around her. She was particularly attentive to my parents, Joyce and Ralph Baird, while they were living in Sussex and our family really appreciated the kindness and consideration she showed them over the years. She was a real gem and will be missed.

My deepest sympathy on the passing of Shirley. I grew up next door to her and she and Keith were wonderful neighbors! As a young girl she would ask me to feed the pets while they were away and it made me feel so nice that she trusted me that way. Over the years I would enjoy running into her at the grocery store or out and about and we always made time to stop and have a chat. Simply a lovely lady and she will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I have so many memories of Shirley I don’t know where to start. When I was 6 years old Shirley came to live with us. She used to read my bedtime stories every night & do my hair in ringlets. We shared the same bed & if someone’s foot crossed onto the other side of the bed, we would have foot fights which always ended up in laughter. She was always there to help with my birthday parties. She worked at Hampton Diner for a while & every so often I would get some fries on the house. Shirley was also my Girl Guide Leader. I remember when we took a trip to Toronto & to Niagara Falls, then another one to New York when we went to the Empire State Building & she & I made a record at the top singing our hearts out. I remember when she was screaming so hard when Elvis came on the Ed Sullivan show for the first time & I thought she was nuts. It wasn’t long before I too was screaming. When she met Keith where she worked with the Forest Service, it was love at first sight. She was so lonesome for him when he went away to study in Edmonton. They were married on a lovely May day. When they first moved to Sussex I used to take the bus up for the weekend. Many great memories of playing scrabble & laughing our heads off. In later years after I moved out west, I would always visit her & Keith for a weekend & after my parents were gone, I would stay with Shirley & Keith when I went back home. We would go for long Sunday drives after church & my stomach would ache from all the laughter. Then a trip out to the camp where the black flies would eat me alive but it was so peaceful out there. Shirley was there when my mom passed away. She flew out west even though she was frightened of flying. She & Keith went to my son’s graduation from Officer Candidate school in Fredericton which he remembers fondly. She knew it would mean a lot to him to have someone there for him. Shirley was the greatest cook. She could whip up a meal in no time & it was always delicious. She made the best strawberry rhubarb pie ever. She, Keith & Heather came out west in the 80’s & then just the two of them in 2001. Even out west we did the long drives & had a blast. Throughout all the years & all the miles we stayed in contact with either monthly phone calls, emails or FaceTime. The last email I received from her was June 6 & I will never delete it. She would always tell me what was going on in her world with family, church & all her visits to the sick & those in mourning & all the volunteer work she did with meals & the Salvation Army kettle. She told me about finally finding her brother & how happy she was they would have a relationship. I think it completed her & grounded her. I never, ever saw her in a bad mood, she always had a smile & a laugh. To Keith, Karen, John & Heather I am so sorry you have lost a magnificent wife, mother, grandmother & great grandmother. And to her extended family my deepest condolences. I take peace in knowing that she had a wonderful life filled with family, faith, happiness, laughter & many, many people who loved her. We will all miss her dearly. Rest In Peace my dear sister. Heather Cameron

I will always remember Aunt Shirley as a beautiful soul who loved to laugh and had a great sense of humour. I can hear her expression, “well, my stars!” The last time I saw Aunt Shirley was years ago in 2015 and as she and Uncle Keith were leaving with Karen & Paul, I quickly snapped a few pics because I teased that they looked like lovestruck teenagers in the backseat! Well done good and faithful servant, your reward is in heaven xo. Love Kerry

Keith , Karen , John , Heather and family Sending our deepest sympathy and love to you at this most difficult time. We remember Shirley fir being such a warm fulfilled lady. During our time in the Parish Steven often teasingly referred to Shirley as Rev.Mother. Oh what laughter from her..In reality she was a revered mother to her children and family , yes even to so many of us who served as her parish priest..We also celebrate a woman of deep faith...a warrior for those marginalized and disenfranchised..She called out bigotry and prejudice in her own quiet way..Ruth and I will be forever grateful for her love and friendship..Rest well with Christ , our blessed Mother and all the saints.
