Obituary of Joseph Thomas Butler
The family of Joseph Thomas Butler are heartbroken to announce his passing at the Sussex Hospital on January 18, 2024. Born in New Castle on December 10, 1946, Joe was the son of Ivy (Rhyno) and Thomas Butler.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, and his wife of 43 years, Patricia (Bickerton). Joe leaves behind three girls, Tammy Armstrong (Dugay) and husband Danny, Jennifer Simon, her husband Shanon, and Dana, wife of Brad Douthwright. Joe had four grandchildren, Dana’s girls Anna and Charlotte who softened the beast, and Jennifer’s stepchildren, Sophia and Dawson-all of whom were loved. Joe also leaves behind his two brothers in law, John Bickerton, Mike Bickerton and their families. Many stories not print-worthy originated from their times together.
Dad, Jennifer, and Dana considered themselves lucky to have had his partner, Jane Brooks by his side the last few years. They are grateful for her unwavering dedication to Dad; taking care of him and making her infectious laugh impossible for Dad to not crack a smile. They had many good times, good talks, and belly laughs. Dad’s life was better for having experienced happiness and love in his final years.
Joe was known by many as being stubborn as an ox, strong as a horse and a fierce protector of his loved ones. He brought flowers to his girls on Valentine’s Day and lectured them on how to choose a partner worthy of their affection.
Dad dabbled in a career as a Police Officer in both New Castle and Sussex; hired for his strength, fearlessness and ability to fight, where he met Mum. They built a loving life together that is fondly remembered by Jen and Dana.
Joe was hired at NB Power and worked his way up the ladder, taking courses that involved enough math calculations to make anyone groan. He was top of his class each time. After 33 years, in retirement, he became the President of the Legion, Sussex Branch #20 for 7 years where his penny-pinching ways allowed for the Legion to buck the trend of Legions diminishing.
Dad exemplified the meaning of working hard and playing hard. His old school mentality balanced perfectly with Mum’s guidance, knowing just how to make him think things were his idea. He often bellowed to his girls to “do as I say, not as I do”, teaching them to be strong and independent women. We always knew he wanted a boy, evident in him having shaped his girls who worked in careers dominated by men.
Dad is resting at Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Dr, Sussex, NB (506-433-1176), and there will be a private family service at a later date.
As a tribute to Dad, his family ask that his extended family, friends, colleagues and frienenemies raise a glass of Crown Royal and remember him fondly.
