Obituary of Dorothy Wallace

It is with heavy hearts, the family of Dorothy Isobel Wallace, loving and devoted wife of the late John Wallace, announce her passing at the Sussex Health Centre on May 5, 2024 at the age of 87. Born on June 5, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Mildred and Frederick Brighton and stepdaughter of the late “Andy” Smith.

Dorothy was a Sussex Cheese and Butter gal when she married John. Dedicating her life to her family, Dorothy then became a stay-at-home mom raising five children, maintaining a house all the while working side by side with John to run a successful dairy farm. She helped with everything from the twice daily milking of cows to working in the garden and the hay fields. Breaks in a ‘hay day’ might be filled with jumping off the wagon to pick raspberries or bake a cake or watch ‘The Edge of Night’. In the fall, the kitchen would often smell of vinegar as garden produce was preserved for the winter.

Dorothy’s welcoming, generous nature made the farm a destination place for many and there was always time for a cup of tea and a visit. Her greatest joy was a house full of children playing dolls, cars, Lego and the occasional piano tune. Declining health in her later years limited her physical abilities but with a sharp mind, sense of humour and heart of gold she maintained involvement in the lives of everyone she came in contact with. Dorothy’s loving heart and perpetual smile will be missed.

Dorothy will live on in the hearts of her children: Ann Parlee (Robert), John Wallace, Marilyn Wallace, Gordon Wallace (Cindy) and Joyce Kyle (Gerald); as well as her grandchildren: Angela, Derek(Sally), Evan, Andrew (Amanda), Jason (Abria), Katelyn (Justin), Brittany (Matthew), Natalie (Robert), Megan (Jesse), Jared (Kaicee) and Sean; her great grandchildren: Devan, Payton, Ava, Lauren, Jack, Hannah, Maylee, Chesley, Ethan, Olivia, Sawyer, Clara, Peyton, Leah, Emma, Kyle and Brynn; as well as her last remaining sibling, Marjorie Curwin and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and late husband, Dorothy was predeceased by her brothers: Walter Brighton (Barb) and Vincent Brighton; her sister, Florence Maber (Donald) and brother-in-law, James Curwin; as well as her sisters-in-law: Lil Wallace, Jean Holden (Arthur), Helen Ness (Ray) and Brothers-in-law: George Wallace (Mary) and Ronald Wallace (Bernice).

At this time the family would like to send a special thank you to Kelly Dunfield, N.P. for her care over the years and to the doctors and nurses of the Sussex Health Centre for their kind and compassionate care of Mom, during her time there.

Arrangements are entrusted to the compassionate care of  Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB, from where visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 from 4-7pm. A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at 1:00pm.

There will be a time of fellowship with the family following the service. The interment will take place in Pioneer Cemetery.
