Alex and I were very sad to hear that you have passed on Dan. We met you briefly whilst travelling in New Zealand (2012). We stayed in the same hostel together for several months whilst picking kiwis. And you soon became famous, not just for your winning smile and happy attitude, but for the amazing cookies you made as well. You coined the name Cookie Time Dan and we always bugged you for more delicious treats. We were so lucky to get to meet and travel with you for a while. It’s been many many years since we had seen you but you were never forgotten. Such good times never are. I think I speak for all our friends from that hostel in saying you will be sorely missed. Our love and hearts go out to the friends and family you’ve left behind. All our love Dan, Stu and Alex xxxx

Katie and Mike, I am so very sorry for your loss. He was so young. I still remember him arriving for his first year in the cherry orchard as Mike’s little brother, with a ready smile that lit up his whole face and the room around him. My condolences to all his family and friends. Christine

Dear Katie,
My deepest condolences for your loss. I was briefly in touch with Dan two weeks ago and was shocked when I heard of Dan’s passing yesterday. Dan was a very warm, gentle person, always offering a helping hand when needed. It’s hard realizing he is not among us anymore. I wish you a lot of strength in the time to come.

I met Dan in 2011 I believe, and saw each other again in 2012 at Dendys. Such a beautiful soul. I am very sad to hear of his passing. Too young and I am sure many people’s hearts are broken. My thoughts are with his friends and family. May he RIP xx

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Daniel's passing when I stopped by for eggs last Wednesday. Although I didn't know Daniel well, we used to stop for a chat. He had done so many interesting things in his life and his warm personality just shone through. Our thoughts and prayers are with Katie and all the family at this time. From Maddie Taylor and Wayne Banks, her fiance, at St Martins.

Carolyn and family,
I'm so deeply sorry for your loss. Please know that my heart aches for your family during this unimaginable time of grief. Although I never met Dan, I've heard just how incredible he was. I hope you do not hesitate to reach out for anything that you need during this time.

I’m so sad I was unable to be in NB today to celebrate Dan’s life and share stories. I am so grateful to have shared space and community with him and Katie. In the past year alone we were able to share food together, walk together and be silly together. Dan always helped out whenever he could and last year repaired a window after work because he had the skills to do it. He was talented and humble and had a soft twinkle in his eye basically all the time.I loved hearing about all the veggies at red top ranch, the projects and the travel plans. Sending so much love to Katie and Jeremiah and Dan’s family. Love you dude xx

I met Dan in 2014 down in Potrero Chico on a climbing trip. Along with my friend Rob, the three of us spent several weeks making jokes, eating good food, and really just living the good life. Dan was always silly and easy to get along with. I ran into him back in California several years later and he was his same good natured self. Rest easy buddy!

Dan will be remembered as a gentle, kind, easygoing soul. I played ball with him and got to know him a little through my cousin Katie. He seemed happy with the simple things in life and seemed happy and at peace with his life in NB.
My heart breaks for Katie, his parents, siblings, family and friends. Katie has a lot of friends and family that care so deeply for her, she will be held through this absolutely difficult time. We will do our best to let Dan’s spirit and memories be at peace here in NB and for Katie to know that she's loved and supported deeply.
I pray his family can know how much of a rich life he lived even in this short period of time. I pray that their hearts grow less and less heavy with time and feel lighter with good memories of Dan.

Sorry to hear this... Condolences to his friends and family
I met Dan while hitch hiking in NZ, when we both got stuck in the middle of nowhere and he let me (random Irish guy with a surfboard) stay in his tent. We ended up travelling up the west coast, adventuring and meeting other cool people on the way.
I didn't know Dan well or for long, but I was thankful he was an open, trusting dude who saw the best in people and his surroundings; he will be remembered!

I knew Dan for a short time, but we shared meaningful moments working late, laughing, and being teammates. I learned a lot from him. Dan was the first person to sign my logbook, and in some way, he will always be a part of my story and my professional growth. Knowing of his passing deeply shook me. I am very sorry for his loss. My condolences to the family.

I met Dan many years ago at DieHard Paintball, truly a very positive person to be around on and off the field, he always lifted up the spirits of those around him. I was lucky enough to call Dan my teammate.
Sharing a memory of playing a tournament together (Dan in blue jersey on the right on the field) and bringing something home - it was a fun day with friends that still feels so recent.
Condolences to family, friends and communities that are missing Dan.

A poem for Dan
Title: Our Memory of You
There was a cross above your head
When you smiled
We never knew how far any of us
Would go
And though you’ve now gone,
You’ve gone further than most
Ever would
I wish we’d had the chance
To catch up and rewind, set the mood
To some new tune
And a voice not lost
But haven’t heard
In what feels like ages
I still remember
The softness of it, though
The casualness with which
You’d consider and let pass
Anything that troubled you.
You moved towards a foreign destiny
And I’ll never know
Of the paths you’ve tread,
The orchards you’ve walked,
Or the mountains that you’ve climbed,
But I do know that
You got to where you wanted to be
I wish we’d had the chance
To reset the score, and start the game anew
To talk about what
Life has offered
What beauties we’ve seen
And pains we’ve endured
Which moments we believed
Would live on forever
You were driven, my friend
Driven by life, to live life, and to be free
And you lived it, my friend, you lived it
If only that you could have lived it for longer...
If only that my selfish wish were made true
That we had the chance to catch up again
To talk of all the time that has passed
Without feeling like any time
Has passed us by at all
If only…
But know that,
There is no sorrow
To be felt
Over a life that has been lived in full
Only the quiet regard
For a life lived so fully,
In so few years –
A regard born of respect
And admiration
For what the soul can accomplish
Should the will be governed
By courage
And compassion,
Driven by the motive force
of “what if?”
Towards the wisdom of the light ahead:
That never ending dawn,
A sunrise that will never set
On our memory of you

In September of 2023, unexpected and extraordinary events led to meeting an even more extraordinary individual, Daniel Howlett. He welcomed us into his home with an open heart and genuine kindness, and created memories that will never be forgotten. I am blessed to have met someone as gracious and generous as Daniel and will forever remember him and the home he built at Redtop Ranch.
