Obituary of Russell Matthews

It is with deep sadness that the family of Arthur Russell Matthews announce his passing on September 14, 2024, at the V.A. Snow Centre in Hampton, NB. Born October 16 , 1932, in Erb Settlement, NB; he was the son of the late Charles and Jessie (Leonard) Matthews.

Russell worked at the Saint John dry dock for 40 years where he forged many friendships and had remained friends with many throughout the years following his time there. He was a devoted member of the church and community. He could often times be found making the coffee and loved talking and socializing with friends, neighbours, and even strangers who quickly became friends. He loved to garden and during the warmer seasons that is where he could often times be found, he took particular pride in his rose garden.

Russell was a proud grampie who adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren, talking to them and about them was the absolute highlight of his day. His best “furry” friend was his dog, Teddy, a faithful companion who was always right by his side. Russell also had a love and appreciation for good music.

Russell is survived by his loving daughters: Marianne MacPhee of Hampton, NB, Donna Johnston (Tom) of Saint John, NB, Brenda Baxter (Bev) of Slave Lake, AB, Evelyn Thomas (Jeff) of Carsonville, NB, and Bobbi Jo Matthews of Upham, NB; his grandchildren: Mellissa (Richard), Anthony(Alicia), Krista (Steven), Scott (Jess), Kayla (Brian), Russell (Melissa), Brandi, Chase, Sean, Cheyenne (Nick), and Carly (Taylor); his 15 cherished great grandchildren; and his sisters: Anne Osbourne and Dorothy Vanderbect, both of Ontario. Russell is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Russell was predeceased by his wife, Mildred; his brother, Lawrence Matthews; and his son-in-law, Mark MacPhee.

The family would like to give special thank you to the staff of the V.A. Snow Nursing Home for all the excellent care they provided to Russell during his stay there. They treated him just like family.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive Sussex, NB (506-433-1176) from where a visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 from 2-4 and 6-8pm. A celebration of Russell’s life will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2024 at 11:00am at the Church of the Ascension, Apohaqui, NB. The interment will follow at Riverbank Cemetery.
