Obituary of Curtis Lackie

It is with deep sadness that the family of Curtis Lemuel Lackie announces his peaceful passing on October 9, 2024 at the Sussex Health Centre.

Curtis was born on March 9, 1934 in Salt Springs, NB; the eldest son of Lemuel and Augusta (Allaby) (Lem and Gussie) Lackie.

He married Patricia Thaxter in January 1955.

Curtis was a hard worker all his life, beginning when he quit school at Christmas time in grade 7 to go to the woods to help support his family. He worked at several occupations including woodsman, farmhand, development of Fundy Park roads and boundaries, Shurgain Feeds, grader operator for DOT, owning and driving his own pulp/gravel trucks, owning his own dairy farm, his own construction company (complete with truck, bulldozer and backhoe). He also worked above and below ground at the potash mine and as a trainer for heavy equipment. Amongst all this time he managed to work with his beloved horses.

Once retired, he continued with his horses for many years, cutting and splitting his own wood and maintaining a large garden. He had many bountiful crops using his secret fertilizer, horse manure. After a snowstorm he would be out very early making sure the surrounding driveways were plowed for people to get to work. His life was definitely a life well lived.

He operated many different types of equipment and soon mastered them. The machinery he enjoyed operating the most were road grader, bulldozer, and a PCA miner (archaic mining machine with no wheels or tracks).

One area he felt he might fall a little short was patience, so when he took a job as a heavy equipment trainer, we didn’t know how it would work. In his earlier years, when he smoked the pipe and his patience wore thing, it always looked like he was going to chew the stem right off. He did make it work and we’re sure he helped turn out many good operators.

He will live on in the hearts of his wife, Pat; his sons: Edward (Bonita), Allen (Rosalie), Jeff (Sherry) and Aaron (Karen); his brothers: Crandall, Alfred (Evelyn) and Ora (Phyllis); 9 grandchildren: Joselyn Legge (James), Mark Lackie, Brenda Hornbrook (Matthew), Thomas Lackie (Mickey), Martina MacIntyre (Jodie), Justin Lackie (Megan), Katelyn Lackie (Marcel), Brenden Lackie (Kalie) and Iyesha Lackie (Jeff Nelson); 15 great grandchildren: Jordan and Jeremy Legge, Breanna, Abbigail and Callie Lackie, Chase (Jamie) and Alex Hornbrook, Ella and Ben MacIntyre, Dawson and Willow Lackie, Thomas and Greta Nelson and Alaina and Mila Lackie; as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.

Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Wendell (Judy); his sisters: Lorna Otis (Elvin) and Shirley Folkins (Paul) as well as his sister-in-law, Ruth Lackie.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB (506-433-1176). A Celebration of Curtis’ life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Monday, October 14, 2024 at 11:00am, followed by a time of fellowship. The interment will take place in Newtown Cemetery.
