Obituary of Bertram Rockwell McMillan
With deep regrets we announce the passing of Bert McMillan in his 98th year on June 2, 2023 at Ridgewood Veterans Wing, Saint John, NB. He lived a long and full life, mostly in the Sussex area. He was born at the Head of Millstream on September 30th, 1925 to Joseph and Katherine McMillan (Flewelling).
He is predeceased by his wife, Margaret L. McMillan (Langell) and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Armitage (Terry) and family; Sheri Wenzl (Berno) and family. He will be greatly missed by his four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Bert is also survived by his sisters, Miriam Haines of Hampton and Pearl Curry of Ontario.
He served in WWII and continued in the military for a further 25 years, reaching the rank of Sgt. Major in the Canadian Artillery. After retiring, he established McMillan’s Chain Saw Shop at Sussex Corner. Always an active member of the community, he held various volunteer positions on the Boards of Fundy Mutual Insurance, Bayview Credit Union, Sussex Fish and Game, Trappers’ Association, as well as a founding member of the SNB Woodlot Co-operative and past president of the McMillan Clan Society of New Brunswick. He taught hunter safety and trapping courses, organized fishing derbies and wild game dinners. Bert had many skills - Log Driver, Lumber Jack, assistant cook (cookie) and apprentice to the Head of Millstream Master Cheese Maker.
Bert enjoyed people, meeting for coffee, breakfast and just telling stories, of which he had many, often ones that were never heard before. His sense of humour endeared him to everyone he met.
Bert and family would like to thank the staff of Ridgewood Veterans Wing for their thoughtful care. As Bert told us, “I have never been in a place where I was treated with such kindness!”
Arrangements have been entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Dr. Sussex, NB (506-433-1176). A Celebration of Life will take place in Sussex at a future date.
